The Red Sleeve

When a prince, who wants to be a better ruler than his cruel ancestors, meets an ordinary woman whose will is in no way ordinary, will their love prosper?

This drama follows the life of a prince who is just and wants to become a great ruler, unlike his cruel and power-loving ancestors. When he comes across a palace maid who has an iron will and resilience, he becomes intrigued in spite of himself. Over time, both of them fall for each other. However, the woman rejects all his requests to become his royal concubine, since she knows that it would restrict her freedom and make her unhappy in the long run. But, as the story progresses, she realizes that the only way to help the prince become a great ruler is to stay beside him as his concubine and help him reach his aim. So, in spite of her happiness, she becomes his concubine.

This drama for me was quite disappointing. Not because the actors didn’t do a great job, but because, the storyline itself was a little absurd at times. I frankly did not understand why she had to give in to the petulant prince and become his concubine. I don’t think that is love. If you have to force someone to stay with you against their better judgment because you want to “own” them, then that is an obsession and not love. All her decision ever did, was make her extremely unhappy. Till the moment she died, she always felt stifled and her dying wish was, in fact, that she never meets the prince again in her next life. Frankly, it was too depressing and sad for me and if I was you, I would definitely skip this one.

Story Line: 9.1/10

The originality of the plot: The plot is original but it’s a depressing watch.

Acting of main protagonists: The chemistry between the leads is good, but the kind of love portrayed borders on obsession and not real love.
