Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth

Can young men and women from different backgrounds and classes, leave behind their prejudices and come together to form the Hwarang Knights and protect their kingdom?

This drama follows the lives of young men and women who belong to different echelons of society, yet come together to form the Hwarang Knights to protect their country. They include a prince who can’t reveal his identity, a loyal friend who must avenge the death of his buddy, a flirtatious noble who is purposeless, a Stoic noble who constantly struggles between his urge to do right and the wishes of his father, and a young man who doesn’t know if he can ever become what his older brother and grandfather expect him to be. The two women in the story are like supporting characters who just support and show the correct way to their loved ones. In the backdrop of a school that forms the knights and trains them, how all of them meet, become friends, and over time learn to protect each other and fight together is what forms the rest of the story.

In my opinion, there are way too many characters with their own idiosyncrasies in this drama to understand who exactly are the leads. Even though the acting of every single person in this drama was quite awesome, this drama suffers from trying to do too many things at once and doing none of them right. It’s like the writers couldn’t decide if they wanted a drama with palace politics, or a drama about self-growth and acceptance, or a romantic drama about a loyal friend who would go to any lengths to protect what is his. There are way too many strong male leads in this drama and all the women are either shown to be extremely stupid and crying all the time, or trying to be cunning, but failing left, right and center. Even though I enjoyed the plot because of the acting and the characters, for me, this drama was not cohesive enough. It had way too many storylines going on in parallel, none of which succeeded in developing completely, and thus, it looked like a story failing to meet its great potential. Overall, if you enjoy a story with an academy of knights with a diversity of characters and a little romance in the backdrop of palace politics, then you might consider watching this one!

Story Line: 8.74/10

The originality of the plot: The plot is an amalgamation of too many storylines, which are not exactly cohesive.

Acting of main protagonists: The chemistry between the leads is quite good. In fact, the acting of all actors is quite awesome.
